Pfizer recently issued a global recall of Oxbryta after studies suggested that taking Oxbryta did nothing to help those suffering from sickle cell disease and in many cases increased the risks associated with sickle cell disease. Specifically, patients experienced more frequent vaso-occlusive crises (VOC) while taking Oxbryta compared to before starting the medication. VOCs are one of the most frequent complications associated with sickle cell disease, characterized by sudden episodes of severe pain that can result in additional health issues, including arthritis, kidney failure, and stroke.
